Judith L. Kuipers, PhD, the president of Fielding Graduate University, has announced she is retiring from the position in June 2009. Dr. Kuipers has served as president of the university since 2000. An endowment campaign for the university has been established in her honor, and a prominent academic executive search firm has been selected to conduct the search for Kuipers' successor.

Dr. Kuipers has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in higher education. Prior to her Fielding presidency, she served for ten years as chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Previous academic leadership positions were at California State University, Fresno, and Oregon State University. Her PhD in human development and early education is from Michigan State University; Dr. Kuipers was an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow and a recipient of a Fulbright Award.

During her tenure at Fielding, Dr. Kuipers has supported the development of creative graduate programs, broadened the university's academic reputation, and introduced innovative advancements in its administrative structure and processes. In response to Dr. Kuipers' announcement, board chairman Jim Muren states "Judith has done a tremendous job of leading Fielding into the 21st century. Her legacy is to leave a solid foundation to allow her successor to take Fielding to the next level of excellence."

In her honor, and to advance her legacy, Fielding announced the President Judith L. Kuipers Endowment Campaign, which will continue until her retirement in the spring of 2009. Those wishing information about the fund or to make a gift should contact Anne Kratz, vice president for advancement and development: 805.898.2926; [email protected].

To assist with their selection of the next Fielding president, the board of trustees retained Witt/Kieffer, an executive search consulting firm with a strong track record in the nonprofit and higher education sectors, to conduct the search. The position announcement and other pertinent details for potential candidates can be viewed on the Witt/Keiffer web site.
