Santa Barbara, CA (February 9, 2009) Richard S. Meyers, PhD, has been appointed to serve as the fifth president of Fielding Graduate University, James Muren, chair of Fielding's Board of Trustees, announced today. Dr. Meyers will assume the office effective July 1, 2009, and succeeds Judith L. Kuipers, PhD, who will step down after a highly successful presidency spanning nine years.

Dr. Meyers has had a long and distinguished career in higher education. Most recently, he served as president of Webster University in St. Louis, MO, from 1994 to 2008. He is known as an innovative and collaborative leader and administrator, with experiences that include the presidency of universities and community colleges as well as faculty positions in instructional technology and in music.

During his 14 years as president of Webster University, he was responsible for significant increases in the university's endowment, its enrollment, and its expansion to 108 campuses worldwide. The Fielding appointment will be Dr. Meyers' fifth presidency in higher education. Prior to Webster University, he served as president at Cerro Coso Community College (75-78), Pasadena City College (78-83), and at Western Oregon University (83-94)

"Fielding Graduate University is indeed fortunate to have an individual of Dr. Meyers' caliber to lead the institution into its next phase of history and to expand its growing stature and influence in higher education," said Chair James Muren. "He shares a passion for the university's academic mission and innovative education for scholar-practitioners, and I have every confidence that he will take Fielding to the next phase of strategic advancement so ably initiated by Dr. Kuipers."

"I have followed and admired the success of Fielding Graduate University throughout my career," said Dr. Meyers. "I am pleased that Fielding has selected me to lead this remarkable graduate university. I am enthusiastic about telling its story and that of its impressive students, faculty, and alumni."

The appointment concluded a national search that began in January 2008, assisted by a leading higher education search firm and led by a 15-person committee that included trustees, alumni, faculty, students, and staff. The committee was co-chaired by Nancy Shapiro, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University System of Maryland and Latham Williams, Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs and Administration of Hudson, Chicago.

Dr. Meyers received his undergraduate degree in music and psychology from DePaul University, and an MS in Music and a PhD in Instructional Technology and Psychology from the University of Southern California. He and his wife Yakko have two grown daughters.
