Fielding Faculty David Antonuccio, Ph.D. coauthored with David Healy, publishes article titled "Relabeling the Medications We Call Antidepressants" in Scientifica.
David summarizes the article: "The article raises the question about whether the data on medications we call antidepressants warrant the label of antidepressant. This is a real question because many of the "side effects" have larger effects sizes than those for the antidepressant effect. For example, the negative effects on sexual functioning are larger than those for the antidepressant effect. Consumers ought to be aware that calling these medications antidepressants is a business decision that may not be adequately supported by the data. They might just as well be called anti-aphrodisiacs but that would obviously have a negative marketing impact."
