Fielding's New Media Psychology Program Director Jerri Lynn Hogg, PhD On Media Psychology and Technology for Good

As president of the American Psychological Association’s Division 46-Society for Media Psychology and Technology, Jerri Lynn Hogg, PhD, now takes on the role as program director of media psychology at Fielding Graduate University.

Jerri Lynn HoggDr. Hogg stepped right into her new role with ease. Coming from years of grounded experience in both academic and professional settings, her teaching experience at a variety of post-secondary organizations, along with her numerous years of involvement in the media psychology program at Fielding, Dr. Hogg is poised and ready to drive media psychology further into the educational forefront of the 21st century. Dr. Hogg's vision of the future of media psychology as a disciple was clearly outlined during her interview for the position of director:

The future of media psychology is impacted by the psychological foundations which form the building blocks of this discipline. These building blocks are what separate us from big media studies departments and other educational areas that hover in the same research space as media psychology. Media psychology is a broad umbrella-based psychology that is grounded in psychology, and also engages theories and research from a variety of other fields that study media and technology.

At Fielding, I believe that we are at a place where we have the opportunity to do something special, to influence peoples’ lives in important and meaningful ways. From understanding how mobile applications can best be used to encourage fitness, or stimulate happiness and mental well-being to create powerful advocacy campaigns and disaster relief efforts, such as the one most recently implemented by the Red Cross app that facilitated donations for the relief efforts in Nepal; we can learn about, demonstrate and research, how emergent technologies are enhancing our lives in powerful ways. By studying the psychological components engaged when we connect with media and technology we can inform better design and application.

For example, we can apply theory to emergent technologies to create and further define dynamic learning environments, use augmented and virtual reality to find new ways to understand and view the world, create delivery models that are media rich in presence, yet can cross geographical and time boundaries, and we can construct media that facilitates socially responsible advocacy for the betterment of humanity. With the ability to connect in more meaningful ways, collaborate cross-boundaries and cultures, share knowledge by making information more readily available and understandable, media psychology is a force for motivation, well-being, and good.

In her newest role as program director, Dr. Hogg continues to affirm the direction she sees the program going and why Fielding is the place for this vision. "It is my goal to continue to foster an energetic research center in media psychology which includes a collaborative learning space and a think-tank environment that provides businesses, organizations, nonprofits, and foundations a place to seek advice, consult, and research the intersection of human behavior and media and technology," stated Dr. Hogg. "My vision for the media psychology program within Fielding is to continue to establish the culture and identity of the program with administration, admissions and marketing, and the university in general, so we can best advertise, promote and attract students who are interested in media psychology...We are best aligned for positive outcomes, and impact, that includes strong student learning and ground breaking research, when there is a good fit. It is the story, the vision, and the cohesive message that allows not only the potential to understand who we are, but creates the vision of what we commit to as a program, a program that embraces the breadth of the field of media psychology in a foundational manner and offers specializations as our core niche. Current proposed certificates in neuroscience, brand psychology, and immersive media are a good start in this direction."

One of Dr. Hogg's areas of interest as a media psychologist is to look at virtual and augmented environments to see how people can bring a sense of presence to these environments - to make it feel as real as when we share physical presence. She frequently speaks on psychological components and influences of media and technology on human behavior and she continues to uncover new areas for research and understanding.

Dr. Hogg began her career studying engineering and then made the unusual jump to journalism and communications. While it might not have made sense at the time to make this transition, it fueled her interest in the science and the technology behind how people are driven to connect and communicate. To this day, she continues to examine a variety of interests, which are primarily based around how media influences people's lives, relationships, and humans make meaning out of life in a highly digitized world. Her passion continues to remain in the ways people connect and make meaning in digital environments. As Dr. Hogg continues her studies as a researcher and as a graduate of the media psychology program at Fielding, she would like to give back to her university and the field she proudly represents.

OCTOBER 10, 2014, As competition becomes increasingly intense for jobs in psychology, it is more important than ever for students to choose graduate psychology degree programs that provide an edge in the workforce. Although many practicing psychologists are deciding to put off retirement, and psychology jobs are growing at the rate of just three percent, the Center for Workforce Studies still reports that 5,000 new psychology doctorates are handed out annually. In order to help you get the most out of your training and beat out the competition for a limited number of jobs, we’ve identified a set of highly innovative graduate-level psychology degree programs for you to consider. Most of the programs described below assume that you’ve already earned a psychology master’s degree.

Society for Military PSY Established Student Chapter at Fielding

The Society for Military Psychology established a Student Chapter at Fielding Graduate University

div 19 image resized 600The Society for Military Psychology, which is Division 19 of the American Psychological Association (APA), has promoted research and practice in military psychology since its initiation as one of the original APA chapters. Division 19 members are involved in a variety of activities including research, treatment delivery, consultation, teaching, and advising congressional committees. Within Division 19, the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) strives to promote awareness, competence, and scholarship in military psychology among students.

In 2012-2013, the Division 19 Executive Committee recognized an opportunity to incorporate an increasingly large student base. It then made student involvement a top priority of Division 19’s overall agenda.  SAC formed a Student Chapter Network to foster a Division 19 presence on university campuses and connect students at different campuses. The Student Affairs Committee appointed student leaders at several of these universities, including Fielding Graduate University. Along with 35+ other Campus Representatives in universities across the country, Jeremy Jinkerson was appointed a Campus Representative to serve throughout 2014 and 2015. The Student Chapter Network allows Fielding’s Student Chapter access to other campus leaders, professional development opportunities, and inter-school collaboration. For example, Fielding’s Student Chapter is hosting an upcoming military psychology seminar in Memphis, TN on June 21st in coordination with the University of Memphis and APA’s Division 56 (Trauma Psychology).

Since initiating Fielding’s Student Chapter, which is chaired by Dr. Daniel Holland, and presided over by Jeremy Jinkerson, completed initiatives have included holding two meetings, electing officers, developing a programming schedule with notable guest speakers, securing a speaker for the national programming track, and creating a local online portal with calendars and military psy meeting resized 600forums (Moodle). In the creation of our programming schedule, chapter leadership has secured presentations by military leaders in psychology, current military psychology interns, and veteran researchers in related disciplines. Members have provided feedback that Division 19’s organized presence has been beneficial in uniting fragmented military psychology enthusiasts, acknowledging the need for specialized training in this area, and giving military spouses a venue to honor their spouses within psychology.

Fielding’s Division 19 Student Chapter is also actively partnered with Fielding Veterans Connection. Fielding Division 19 officers sit on the Fielding Veterans Connection planning committee, and the Veterans Connection serves in an advisory capacity to the Division 19 Student Chapter. The two groups work closely on most events and initiatives. Future initiatives include service projects related to helping active military, veterans, and military families.

Fielding's model of distributed learning can be particularly appealing to students with military connections. However, student organizations like Division 19 and the Fielding Veterans Connections serve an additional need by expressing value in military psychology, addressing the interests of those with military connections, and supporting individuals wishing to work with military populations.  The Student Chapter’s intention is to not only provide practical advice, beneficial presentations, and a heightened awareness of the importance of military psychology specialization, but to foster a stronger sense of community among Fielding students with military connections.

Division 19 membership is valuable and inexpensive. Benefits include student list-serv and social media access, leading-edge webinars, career support, early information on new training programs, newsletter publication opportunities, and subscriptions to the Military Psychologist newsletter (published three times per year) and Military Psychology journal (published six times per year). Fielding Graduate University Announces APA Accreditation Renewal

Fielding Graduate University: APA Accredited Since 1991

Fielding Graduate University is pleased to announce that the American Psychological Association (APA) has renewed its accreditation for the doctoral PhD program in Clinical Psychology. Fielding offers the only APA accredited clinical psychology doctoral program utilizing a distributed learning model. This program in the School of Psychology has been continually accredited by the APA since 1991.

The APA’s Commission on Accreditation commended the program in each of its areas of review, including, program resources, program self-assessment and quality enhancement, and the program’s philosophy, objectives and curriculum plan.

The report cited student-faculty relations as a “major strength of the program is its positive regard of its students, and its belief in their rights to courtesy, respect, collegiality, and sensitivity.” Fielding’s president, Katrina Rogers, PhD, stated, “Our clinical psychology program has served students and communities around the country for forty years, and we are pleased that APA has continued to affirm the quality of the program and its faculty. We are proud of our students, alumni, and faculty who continue to meet the highest of standards set by APA in a discipline that is so critical to the health and well-being of all societal members.”

The report also praised the School of Psychology’s value of diversity stating “the program recognizes the importance of cultural and individual difference and diversity in the training of psychologists…the program’s training mission is also committed to ensuring coverage of issues of diversity, requiring not only a formal course on multicultural diversity, but also the infusion of diversity throughout many aspects of the formal curriculum as well as informal, extra-curricular activities.”  

Fielding pioneered a distance education model comprised of blended and distributed learning that has served adult professionals for forty years. By creating flexible opportunities for individuals with career, family, and community responsibilities to achieve their advanced educational goals, Fielding’s community of scholar-practitioners helps define the future of psychology at every level—from theory to practice and research. In a message to the Fielding community, President Katrina Rogers wrote:

I just want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the clinical psychology faculty members for the many ways in which they continue to strengthen the program, support our students’ intellectual development, and contribute to making our program the best in the country.

In the letter, APA staff wrote:

“The program has made a compelling argument and is to be commended.  The program has a clearly specified philosophy of education and training, compatible with the mission of its sponsor institution and appropriate to the science and practice of psychology.  The program demonstrates a commitment to excellence through self-study, which assures that its goals and objectives are met, enhances the quality of professional education and training obtained by its students, and contributes to the fulfillment of its sponsor institution’s mission.”

Division 46 was founded in the 1980s to bring scholars, researchers, practitioners, and clinicians together to understand the implications of mediated communications and the increasing integration of media technologies across society.The rapid change in the media landscape in the last 20 years highlights the importance of media psychology to understand the psychological impact of human interaction with media technologies across society and around the globe. This makes the field of media psychology an exciting and continually evolving field that touches every aspect of life, from business, entertainment and leisure to education and healthcare.

Passionate about social media, technology, and digital environments, Hogg researches and consults on how we communicate, connect, and find balance in changing environments. As a psychologist she applies theory, practice, and research to humanizing the technological landscape and digital experience.

Hogg is a senior research fellow at the Media Psychology Research Center, a research and consulting organization helping companies create positive and effective media, messaging, and technology. Hogg is also an international presenter and consultant examining the cultural influence on human behavior and digital media, virtual communities and worlds, connection through social media communities, the psychology behind effective communication design, new and changing learning communities, and how to create solid user experience design.  

Hogg is also a faculty member of Fielding Graduate University's Media Psychology program and the University of Hartford’s Psychology department, curriculum design consultant at Bay Path College, and an instructor of media psychology, audience profiling, and narrative media for UCLA Extension and UC Irvine Extension Business School. 

She also authors a blog for Psychology called “The Digital Life”.

Accumulating and sharing knowledge in Qualitative Research

Qualitative Psychology is a new bi-annual publication of The Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology (a Section of APA Division 5) starting in 2014 with Josselson selected as editor. This journal aims to represent a wide variety of methodological approaches including narrative, discourse analysis, life history, phenomenology, ethnography, action research, and case study. The mission of this journal is to provide a forum for innovative methodological, theoretical, and empirical work that advances qualitative inquiry in psychology. Studies published in this journal will often focus on substantive topics, while also highlighting issues of epistemology, the philosophy of science, methodological criteria, or other matters bearing upon the formulation, execution, and interpretation of qualitative research.

Along with her role as editor, Josselson RJ book cover resized 600recently published a new book titled, Interviewing for Qualitative Inquiry: A Relational Approach.

Engagingly written, this book builds the reader's skills for conducting in-depth interviews designed to address a particular research question. With an emphasis on the dynamics of the research relationship, Josselson artfully demonstrates the steps of a successful interview. Each step is illustrated with excerpts from interviews on diverse topics. The book describes how to structure interviews effectively, develop questions that elicit meaningful narratives, cultivate skills for empathic listening and responding, avoid common pitfalls, and deal with problems that develop in an interview.

RuthellenKeeping her calendar full, Josselson was the keynote speaker at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in Champaign-Urbana, IL on May 15, 2013.  The conference was a major opening conference at the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (QI). Now at it’s ninth edition, the QI Congress provides opportunities for lively and exciting debates on qualitative inquiry as a shared, innovative, and global endeavor that engages social justice and disparities in social, educational, and health sciences.

Ruthellen Josselson, PhD, is professor of clinical psychology at Fielding Graduate University and a psychotherapist in practice. She was formerly a professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard University and a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University. Her research focuses on women’s identity and on human relationships. She received both the Henry A. Murray Award and the Theodore R. Sarbin Award from the American Psychological Association as well as a Fulbright Fellowship. She has been active in group relations work for many years, consults to organizations, and lectures and conducts workshops both nationally and internationally. She is co-director of the Irvin D. Yalom Institute of Psychotherapy. On her approach to therapy: “I work from a psychodynamic and an existential psychotherapy perspective. I think of psychotherapy as a project that two people undertake together to try to better understand the problems of living in order to make changes that serve growth and personal fulfillment. I work primarily with conflicts concerning relationships, work and identity, and these often underlie symptoms of anxiety and depression.”

Dr. Alice Brand Bartlett awarded the American Psychological Association Excellence in Librarianship Award

Dr. Alice Brand BartlettDr. Alice Brand Bartlett, psychologist and psychoanalyst, was awarded the American Psychological Association’s Excellence in Librarianship Award at the American Library Association’s meeting in Anaheim CA June 23, 2012. Bartlett was  honored for her work as Director of the Menninger Professional Information Services (1979-2001) and her original research that led to the development PEPweb, a full text database of the significant psychoanalytic journals and books including the complete works of Freud in English and German. Bartlett has served as a Director on PEP’s International Board since 1998. 

Bartlett is in private practice in Topeka Kansas and is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst with the Greater Kansas City Psychoanalytic Institute.  She received her Master’s in Library Science from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO and her PhD in psychology from Fielding Graduate University, Santa Barbara, CA.

Fielding alumnus becomes chair-elect of CASAP

At the winter meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA), Eric Willmarth , PhD, of Kentwood, MI, was voted chair-elect of the Coalition for Academic, Scientific, and Applied Research Psychology (CASAP). This group serves as a forum for issues coming before the APA Council of Representatives and helps to formulate positions on issues which further the interests of research in psychology.

Dr. Willmarth is a 1999 graduate of Fielding’s School of Psychology.

Tonya Bennett Receives 2012 Jerry Nims Student Research Award

Fielding Graduate University’s School of Psychology Faculty Research Committee has chosen Tonya Bennett of Thousand Oaks, CA as the 2012 recipient of the Jerry Nims Graduate Student Scholarship for her accomplishments of scholarly publications and presentations. Bennett is a doctoral student in Fielding’s clinical psychology program.

 The award was established in honor of the late Jerry Nims, PhD, JD, a founding faculty member of the university’s School of Psychology. Bennett is the first-time recipient of the award, which will be an annual recognition with a cash award and determined by the Faculty Research Committee.

Bennett's recent research has focused on the functional trajectory of neuropsychological factors in the aging population. She was senior writer for “Disorders of Written Language” of the recently published Encyclopedia of Neuropsychological Disorders. Her numerous publications have been on ADHD and factors in neuropsychological testing. She has a long history of working with children with severely compromising disorders (e.g., autism, cerebral palsy). Her report on the effects of aging on intellectual and memorial activity earned her an Honorable Mention at the American College of Professional Neuropsychology in 2011.

Currently she teaches graduate courses at California Lutheran University and assists Fielding faculty member Henry Soper, PhD, as his Coordinator of Research. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Bennett holds an MA in clinical psychology from Fielding Graduate University and an MS in counseling psychology from California Lutheran University.
