Fielding announces student research grants

Fielding congratulates the following students who have received research grants of amounts up to $1,000 from the university. The awardees were chosen by the research funds granting committee headed by Provost Katrina Rogers, PhD.

School of Psychology:

Jeff Bryson (Rainbow City, AL) - “Toward a synergistic cognitive-behavioral model for concomitant insomnia and pain”

Chuck Cancilla (Buford, GA) - “Mindful versus traditional martial arts towards improved academic grades in children diagnosed with ADHD”

Claude Robinson, PhD (Knoxville, TN) - “A validity study of projective drawings”

 School of Educational Leadership & Change:

Lauri Francis (Peekskill, NY) - “Teacher leadership for the 21st century: Teacher leaders’ experience in supporting the pedagogical practice of academic rigor”

School of Human & Organizational Development:

Kathy Kaya (Carlsbad, CA), “An exploration of Sansei women’s experience of a holistic approach to learning about their own and others’ encounters with oppression and privilege”


In addition, psychology students Salvatore Carbonaro (Fresno, TX) and Heidi Mattila (Washington, DC) earned the award for best research poster at Fielding’s national session in January 2012, “Self-reported alcohol consumption and religiosity among clinicians affects severity ratings of clients’ alcohol consumption”

Fielding Supports Goals of Occupy Wall Street

The gap between rich and poor is greater than ever before in our lifetimes, and we need to stand up for those who are trying to improve their circumstances and provide for their families. As a graduate institution serving a community of scholars and practitioners who are devoted to learning and social change, we stand in support of movements like Occupy Wall Street, which attempt to create dialogue and collective engagement of our citizens at such critical social moments.

Students at institutions of higher education are being forced to pay more for tuition and go deeper into debt because of cuts in state funding and federal aid programs. The Social/Ecological Justice and Diversity Commission of the Academic Senate at Fielding Graduate University applauds the goals of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which continues to highlight the inequity and unfairness of the society in which we live. We strongly support the movement and wish it every success. We are in this together and support activities that foster continuing dialogue around these important social issues and strengthen our democratic engagement.

New online test preparation is offered for clinical licensure exams

The School of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University and the Taylor Study Method (TSM), the leading online test preparation company for the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP), have formed a strategic partnership designed to strengthen students’ readiness for their future clinical licensure exams. This will be accomplished by TSM working with Fielding to provide early, integrated exposure to EPPP concepts throughout students’ educational experiences while at Fielding. 

This strategic partnership was brought about through the diligent collaborative efforts of both organizations.  Special recognition for this accomplishment goes to Graham Taylor, PsyD, TSM’s founder, and Gerardo Rodriguez-Menendez, PhD, MS Cl Pharm, interim dean of Fielding’s School of Psychology.

Media Psychology Founder Honored by APA

Dr. Bernard Luskin, the founder of Fielding’s doctoral media psychology program, has been honored by the American Psychological Association with a lifetime achievement award from its Media Psychology Division. Luskin was recognized for his pioneering work that largely defined the field of media psychology. His distinguished career includes posts in higher education, media, business, and psychology.

 When in 2003 he created Fielding’s doctoral media psychology program, the first of its kind, he said “The study of media effects and understanding the psychology of media are fundamental to emerging social, commercial, and educational trends.” Luskin is now chief executive officer and senior provost of Touro University Worldwide. He is pictured with former students who have gone on to leadership roles in journalism, entertainment, publishing, telecommunications, government, public policy, and other fields related to media and psychology.

Rodriguez Appointed Interim Psychology Dean

Gerardo Rodriquez-Menendez, PhD, has been appointed interim dean for the School of Psychology at Fielding Graduate University.

In announcing the appointment, Fielding President Richard Meyers, PhD, stated: "We are honored to have Gery take on this pivotal role. He is passionate and knowledgeable in the field of psychology and experienced in leading a school through the processes of change while staying true to the university's mission and vision."  


Rodriquez earned his PhD in clinical psychology and an MS in general psychology from the Miami Institute of Psychology of the Caribbean Center for Advanced Studies. Additionally he completed a postdoctoral master’s in psychopharmacology from Nova Southeastern University.

 His career spans a broad spectrum of responsibilities in education, administration, research, and consulting. As the chancellor at Carlos Albizu University, Miami Campus he managed the accreditation process of a clinical psychology program while concurrently teaching and providing clinical supervision to students.

 Rodriguez is a practicing psychologist, an author of articles and books, and a frequent presenter at conferences across the country. Among his areas of expertise are promoting minority enrollment in clinical psychology programs and developing multicultural training models.  Rodriquez is bilingual and has published on psychology topics in both English and Spanish.

 In accepting the position, Rodriguez stated “For years I have admired Fielding and know of the high regard in which it’s held in the academic and psychology communities. I look forward to contributing to the university’s further growth and development.”

Joseph Bush Named an APA Fellow

Joseph Bush, PhD, an associate dean in Fielding's School of Psychology, has been named a Fellow of The Society of Pediatric Psychology, Division 54 of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Through its divisions, APA names as "Fellows" individuals who are deemed to have made outstanding career contributions to defined areas in psychology.  Award recipients are selected by appointed executive committees within a division, which forward these nominees to a central APA committee where approval is determined.  Bush was selected by the executive committee of the Society for Pediatric Psychology (APA Division 54) to be named as a Fellow for his career contributions in scholarship, teaching, and service in the field. 

Fielding congratulates Dr. Bush on achieving this significant professional honor.
