Creativity: An Important Paradigm for Aging

The National Center for Creative Aging explains: “Health and wellness can be achieved in many ways, including using creativity to work the mind and body. Research has shown that mental activity stimulated by arts activities can be especially beneficial to people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Cases of cognitive disabilities increase with age, so as the population lives longer more people will be diagnosed. By bringing arts programs to people with cognitive disabilities, you can create more opportunities for people with cognitive loss and their caregivers.” http://www.creativeaging.org/health-wellness (accessed December 14, 2012) 

Encouraging creativity in the lives of older adults strengthens morale, enhances physicaldescribe the image health, and enriches relationships.

Historically, older adults have functioned as the keepers of culture in society, and are responsible for passing on the history and values of a community to the next generation. Creativity in later life wraps this gift to children, grandchildren, and society in the form of beautiful artwork. The Sixth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging, hosted by Fielding Graduate University, is a highly interactive gathering of diverse leaders and community members interested in shaping a dynamic future for older adults throughout the world. The conference features the following workshops and presentations focused on creativity and aging:

  • Visionaries Have Wrinkles: Serving the Generation Who Will Change the World by Karen Sands

  • The Courage to be Brilliant: How to Aging with Courage, Wisdom and Grace by Marta Monahan

 The Sixth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging features a keynote address by Wendy Lustbader, MSW, who will speak about “The Unexpected Pleasures of Growing Older"—the title of her latest book. She has also written and spoken about kindness and how to nurture a basic positive attitude towards whatever life brings as we get older.  Featured speaker Dr. Brian de Vries is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, a member of the leadership council for the American Society on Aging, and co-chair of the Lesbian and Gay Aging Issues Network constituency group. Dr. de Vries will speak about his extensive work on aging experiences, including bereavement among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender adults. Further highlighted speakers include one of the reigning pioneers of gerontology, James Birren, who will receive Fielding Graduate University’s Creative Longevity and Wisdom Award along with well-known spiritual leader Ram Dass, who will relay his experience in spiritual methods and practices via webinar.

Preparations are set for the Sixth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging in Los Angeles, CA in February 2013

Featuring keynote speaker Wendy Lustbader, MSW, live webinar with Ram Dass, award recognition for Dr. James E. Birren,and presentation from Dr. Brian de Vries amongst many others.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, baby boomers will turn 65 at a rate of 10,000 per day for the next decade making them the fastest growing segment of the population. Future implications indicate: “tomorrow’s elderly will have quite different social, demographic, health, and economic characteristics than today’s elderly… as average length of life continues to increase, issues regarding the quality of active life expectancy are likely to assume greater importance.” In anticipation of this growing segment of our population, the Sixth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging, hosted by Fielding Graduate University’s Institute for Social Innovation, brings together notable speakers and workshop leaders to explore new and innovative approaches to positive aging. This year’s topic is “Life-Reimagined: New Approaches to Positive Aging” and the conference will take place February 10-12, 2013 at the Center for Healthy Communities at The California Endowment in Los Angeles.

The Sixth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging includes a variety of workshops that explore themes of creative expression, community, wellness, and life transitions.  Dr. Katrina Rogers, Provost of Fielding Graduate University and Senior Vice-President states:  “Positive aging promotes creativity, wellness, and growth. It means taking personal control of your life instead of being a victim or passive observer. In this model, aging presents a new opportunity for being socially active, for engaging with the community, for being productive, and for seeking a new meaning and purpose in life. This is why the conference is larger each year: people are interested about how to age well.” The conference provides opportunities to engage in physical and creative activities, including yoga, meditation, music, and connecting with others with similar interests.  Conference registration is open to the public.

Wendy Lustbader resized 600The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is Wendy Lustbader, MSW, who currently serves as Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Social Work. Ms. Lustbader has considerable experience working with older people, their families and caregivers, and lectures nationally on subjects related to aging.  As a medical social worker, she specialized for almost twenty years in out-patient mental health at the Pike Market Medical Clinic in Seattle, and has also practiced in a home health care agency, hospital geriatric unit, and nursing home. Ms. Lustbader’s first book was co-authored with Nancy Hooyman, Taking Care of Aging Family Members. This is a practical guide to caregiving which is still considered the best book of its kind by experts in the field of aging. At the opening reception on Sunday, February 10th, Ms. Lustbader will speak about her latest book, Life Gets Better: The Unexpected Pleasures of Growing Older.

 

Ram Dass resized 600The conference will also host a webinar with world-renowned American contemporary spiritual teacher and author Ram Dass. He is known for his personal and professional associations with Timothy Leary at Harvard University in the early 1960's, for his travels to India and his relationship with the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba, and for founding the charitable organizations Seva Foundation and Hanuman Foundation. His practice of karma yoga or spiritual service has opened up millions to their deep, yet individuated spiritual practice and path. Dass continues to uphold the boddhisatva ideal for others through his compassionate sharing of true knowledge and vision. His unique skill in getting people to cut through and feel divine love without dogma is still a positive influence on people all over the world.

 

BirrenPic resized 600Dr. James E. Birren is one of the "reigning pioneers" in the organized field of gerontology since the 1940s. He is a past president of The Gerontological Society of America, and author of over 250 publications. Dr. Birren will receive Fielding's Creative Longevity and Wisdom Award in recognition of his six decades of seminal contributions including the influential work on guided autobiography.

 

 

 

 

Brian de Vries resized 600Featured speaker Dr. Brian de Vries, Professor of Gerontology at San Francisco State University, and will share his extensive work on aging experiences, including bereavement among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender adults.  He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of American, a member of the Leadership Council for the American Society on Aging, and co-chair of the Lesbian and Gay Aging Issues Network constituency group. Most recently, Dr. de Vries has become a policy advisor for AARP, California. 

 

 

 

Attendees include professionals in the fields of health care, insurance, life planning, care giving and lifelong learning, as well as those interested in ageism, gaining, spirituality, creativity, wellness, entrepreneurship and more.

Early registration for the three day conference is $275 until January 14th, 2013, and $300 after. Single day tickets are $125. Registration includes meals and opening reception Sunday evening.  To attend only the Sunday dinner reception featuring keynote speaker Wendy Lustbader is $80.

Fielding faculty member Jeff Leinaweaver to present at the first Symposium for the Study of Myth

Jeff LeinaweaverJeff Leinaweaver, Fielding Graduate University faculty member, ISI fellow and alumni will be presenting on the eco-psychology of living myth and its role in sustainable living at the first Symposium for the Study of Myth co-sponsored by the Joseph Campbell Foundation, Opus Archives and Research Center, and Pacifica Graduate Institute.

This is the first conference of its kind to discuss the exploration of myth and its intersection in culture, theory and practice. Symposium themes are organized around three broad areas of inquiry and action: Myth in Culture, Myth in Theory, and Myth in Practice, and will include a blend of self-selecting energies and traditional formats. There will be round table discussion sessions, paper panels, keynote lectures by luminaries in the field of myth studies, and special events that include media presentations and performances. The Symposium runs Aug 31st to Sept 2nd in Santa Barbara.

Fielding alumna honored by Girl Scouts of America

Fielding graduate Thelma Jackson, EdD (ELC ’02), is being honored as a Thurston County Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of America. The honor is given to women who have turned their Girl Scout experiences into successful life accomplishments.

Jackson is a highly regarded and sought-after educational consultant and a leading educational transformation theorist. She will receive the honor on May 2, 2012, in Olympia, WA. Also receiving the honor that day will be the Honorable Christine Gregoire, Governor of the State of Washington, and Kaleen Cottingham, Director of the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office.

Richard Leider is a respected life/work planning specialist and author of The Power of Purpose: Creating Meaning in Your Life and Work. The book serves as a jumping-off point for those who’d truly like to combine their “own unique gifts” with “the needs of the world” to carve out a vocational niche that’s both individualized and highly rewarding. According to Fielding founding president, Frederic M. Hudson, “The Power of Purpose teaches you to embrace the complex questions life is asking you. Find your ‘why’ and your ‘how’ will become clear.”

Leider is founder and chairman of The Inventure Group, a coaching and consulting firm in Minneapolis, MN. He works with national organizations such as Ameriprise, Ericsson, Habitat for Humanity, MetLife, and PricewaterhouseCoopers and is ranked by Forbes as one of the top five most respected executive coaches in the country. He teaches executive education at Duke Corporate Education and is a guest lecturer in the Harvard Business School’s general management program.

Two of Leider’s books, Repacking Your Bags and The Power of Purpose are considered classics in the personal development field. Two other books have been referred to as breakthrough books on positive aging.

Fielding Alumni Among Winners of HASTAC MacArthur Stage One Competition

Diana Graber and Cynthia Lieberman, 2010 graduates of Fielding Graduate University’s Media Psychology and Social Change master’s program, recently received the Stage One HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation grant for their proposal in the Badges of Lifelong Learning Competition.  Their proposal, “CyberWise - Digital Literacy for Grownups,” was one of the 60 winners posted at www.dmlcompetition.net.

The competition is held in collaboration with the Mozilla Foundation and is part of the 4th Digital Media and Learning Competition funded by the MacArthur Foundation and administered by HASTAC (the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory). The Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition is designed to encourage the creation of digital badges and badge systems that support, identify, recognize, measure, and account for new skills, competencies, knowledge, and achievements for 21st century learners wherever and whenever learning takes place.

Stage One applicants were asked to submit ideas for compelling learning content, activities, or programs for which a badge or set of badges would be useful for recognizing learning that takes place in a particular area or topic. Winning applications represent a wide array of public and private institutions and organizations from around the world, including museums, nonprofits, after-school programs, research institutions, and for-profit companies.

Stage Two opens on December 12 and seeks badge system design and tech proposals that respond to Stage One winning content or content from one of the Competition’s official Collaborators—including the Department of Education, the Department of Veteran Affairs, Microsoft, Intel, NASA, the American Library Association and more. Bateson Receives Fielding Award in Social Change & Positive Aging

Bateson resized 600Writer and cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson is slated to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Change and Positive Aging from Fielding Graduate University. The award will be presented during the Fifth Annual International Conference on Positive Aging. Co-sponsored by Fielding, the conference is being held December 6-9, 2011, at the California Endowment Center, 1000 N. Alameda Street, Los Angeles. Bateson will deliver the keynote address, a dialogue about her latest book, Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom. The conference schedule is available at www.positiveaging.fielding.edu

Bateson has taught at Harvard, Northeastern, and George Mason Universities, and since 2006 has been a Visiting Scholar at the Center on Aging & Work/Workplace Flexibility at Boston College. She travels extensively to lecture on her model of Active Wisdom, which covers community dialogue, the contributions and improvisations of engaged older adults, and the consciousness of the life cycle through which she explores intergenerational communication and ways of experiencing time. In her memoir With a Daughter’s Eye, Bateson discusses life with famous parents, Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson.

The conference theme, “Innovation in Positive Aging,” invites an exploration of the ways in which people are creating new and more effective answers to the question What does it mean to age well? During dynamic, interactive sessions, presenters and participants will consider issues of community, wellness, creativity, and life transitions as they relate to the aging population – both those in the midst of the experience and professionals working in the field.

Fielding Launches Program in Digital Asset Management

Fielding Graduate University is offering a new online graduate-level certificate in the emerging field of digital asset management. The program’s focus is on what media professionals in the digital asset field (e.g., those working in graphics services, web content, multimedia archives) need to know about managing digital data and the strategic use of those assets and reusable media components. Students will explore the challenges of and systems solutions to managing, rating, grouping, downloading, archiving, and exporting digital files containing massive amounts of data.

Required courses for the certificate are Fundamentals of Digital Asset Management and Best Practices of Metadata. Among the media psychology electives are the courses Global Media and Social Advocacy, Positive Psychology and Pro-Social Media, Media and Political Psychology, and Identity in the Virtual Age.

The curriculum will be completed entirely online over a span of three academic terms and require approximately 10 weekly study hours. Students may apply for admission to the master’s program in media psychology and if accepted their certificate units will be credited toward the degree requirements. Fielding offers new course in creativity in organizations

Fielding Graduate University along with Disney Institute is offering a new graduate course on crafting cultures of creativity and innovation in organizations. The course begins at Fielding in Santa Barbara on January 13, 2012, followed by a four-week online seminar that begins on January 23. Registration must be made by November 25 and can be completed online at https://secure.fielding.edu/forms/Imagineering-Process.htm.

Participants can expect to learn to achieve the following in their organizations:

  1. Leverage creativity and innovation to enhance performance,
  2. Use creative methods in work processes,
  3. Apply innovative methods to sustain positive and profitable relationships, and
  4. Incorporate principles of creativity and innovation to improve employee engagement and retention.

The January 13 event in Santa Barbara will be a one-day in-depth engagement with Disney personnel and case studies focused on inspiring creativity. The subsequent four-week online seminar series includes sessions on building creativity and innovation through organizational culture, identity, structural systems, and leadership.  Emphasis throughout is on producing an actionable plan to improve a work process, organizational design, technological innovation, marketing and/or sales program, or other real-world need.

The course is offered at $1950 plus travel and lodging expenses. Participants can register for 2 graduate-level or 3 continuing education units or 14 Coaching CEU credits. This relationship between Disney Institute and Fielding Graduate University integrates the unique and profoundly successful strategies for creativity and innovation, which Disney is known for, with Fielding’s thirty-five year history of educating working professionals to deepen their knowledge in support of organizational and social change.
